The Associate Editor usually oversees this process and writes the subsequent decision letter (accept, reject, or revise and resubmit).

If either reader evaluates the paper as having a reasonable likelihood of ultimately being accepted for publication in the journal, then it is sent to two or more external referees for extended review. To facilitate this approach, authors will be asked to upload a anonymized version of the submission. In this initial review, manuscripts are anonymized as to authors and originating institutions.

In most cases, the specialist reader is an Associate Editor, and the generalist reader is a Senior Editor or the Editor-in-Chief. One reader has interests and expertise in the relevant research area and offers a specialist’s opinion, whereas the other reader, who may be less knowledgeable in the subject matter, provides a generalist’s perspective. Two members of the editorial team read each submitted manuscript.
